2020 GNP Winter Wilderness Intern Begins his Internship David Michalove, Glacier National Park's first backcountry winter wilderness intern, started his internship on February 16 and will continue until April 28.This program is made possible by a grant from the Taggart Schubert Memorial Fund which memorializes Taggart Schubert, a summer intern who died in a climbing accident while ascending Mt. Jackson in 1995. It is administered by the Glacier National Park Volunteer Associates. David is from Issaquah, WA and currently is a student at St. John's College in Santa Fe, NM. His outdoor skills include ski touring, avalanche awareness, mountaineering and camping. Just after his arrival at the park, he climbed Mt. Shields and subsequently skied up to the Mt. Brown fire lookout! David is shown here as Tom Nelesen, president of GNPVA, presents a $10,000 check from the Taggart Schubert Memorial Fund to Paul Austin, Chief Ranger, Glacier National Park. This check will cover David's salary while his additional equipment needs will be taken care of by the Glacier National Park Volunteer Associates, up to $3,500. Brad Blickhan, GNP Wilderness and Wild and Scenic River Coordinator, is also in the picture.
