BACKCOUNTRY RANGER INTERN

Backcountry Ranger Intern Program

In 1996 GNPVA announced the formation of the Backcountry Ranger Intern program.

The Associates would provide the funds for the salary of a summer intern, while the Park would select the intern and furnish housing, training and uniforms.  Currently, the intern is based at the Walton Ranger Station, but may move to different areas of the backcountry during the summer.

CLOSED FOR THE 2022 SEASON

After careful consideration, GNP has decided to keep the Apgar Nature Center (ANC) closed for the 2022 summer season. Although park personnel explored a series of alternatives and risk mitigations, when considering the shifting COVID-19 pendulum and the nature of the facility (e.g., size, lack of ventilation, visitor use patterns, hands-on element), they determined it would be best to keep the facility closed for the 2022 season. Their commitment to protecting the safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors will continue to guide their operational decisions.

The Nature Center would have been entering its eleventh summer season in 2022 of being open six hours a day, seven days a week. This is largely due to the efforts of GNPVA volunteers who staff the Center and coordinate the volunteers. We all are looking forward to the opening of the Nature Center in 2023.

GNPVA volunteers are always welcome to join the staff of the Apgar Nature Center.
